LEV-Oil, Coolant & Mist Extraction

At G-Tech Machine Safety Ltd as part of its ongoing Machine Safety business we design, manufacture and install compliant LEV and Oil Mist Extraction systems to comply with PUWER98 and COSHH Regulations.

We offer a full risk assessment and PUWER 98 assessment of machinery where there is a long term risk of major injury or fatality from air born dust or oil mist through inhalation  of air born particles which leads to long term respiratory problems.

On completion of installation of recommended LEV dust or oil/ coolant mist extraction systems G-Tech Machine Safety Ltd also offer an annual safety audit including air flow measurement readings to monitor efficiency.

The size and specification of extraction systems is calculated by volume of the machine guarding or canopy and air the flow required to remove air born dust or oil/coolant mist as quick as possible.

Additional safety measures like installing solenoid type interlocks and timing relays which delays the opening of the guard doors by a number of seconds after the equipment has stopped enables the oil / coolant mist or dust to be removed from the atmosphere sufficiently before the guard doors are open thus preventing inhalation.

What is LEV Testing?

LEV testing, or Local Exhaust Ventilation testing, is a mandatory process to ensure that extraction systems effectively remove hazardous particles from the air, safeguarding employees from exposure to harmful substances. These tests are a legal requirement in the UK, regulated by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and under the Control of Substances Hazardous
to Health (COSHH) Regulations. LEV testing verifies the system's performance and effectiveness, ensuring it meets industry standards and HSE guidelines.

LEV testing is a thorough examination of dust and fume control systems to ensure they effectively protect workers from harmful airborne substances. It involves checking the condition of ducts, hoods, and filters, measuring system performance, and assessing overall functionality.

Specialized instruments like anemometers, manometers, pitot tubes, smoke testers, beam torches, fan rotation tools, and particle counters are used to ensure accurate results.

Why does my business need LEV testing?

LEV testing is a legal requirement to protect workers from hazardous airborne substances like fumes, dust, oil mist, and vapors. A Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) System effectively removes these risks from the workplace. Regular testing is affordable and ensures peace of mind for both employers and employees. Following HSE guidelines is crucial for staff safety. Companies that fail to comply may receive warnings and, if uncorrected, face fines. The HSE conducts random workplace inspections across the UK daily to ensure worker protection.

1

PROTECT YOUR
PEOPLE

The risks to health from coolant mist and smoke are well known. Health risks include bronchitis, work-related asthma, and long-term breathing difficulties.

HSE currently do not provide an exposure limit for coolant mists and as an employer you should reduce coolant mist levels to as low as reasonably practicable.

2

PROTECT YOUR
PRODUCTS

Contaminated product requires additional cleaning; where machining processes share space with other manufacturing facilities, an atmosphere filled with oil, coolant mist or smoke will reduce finish quality.

3

HELP SAVE YOU MONEY

A healthy workforce is always more productive – fewer sick days mean a more effective business. Collect and filter mist from oil and coolant to ensure staff health and safety.

More importantly, the cost of failing to make a proper assessment under COSHH, and take steps to address issues, can be the most expensive mistake your business ever makes.

4

FULL COMPLIANCE
GUARANTEED!

All LEV tests comply with HSE requirements, and we’ll provide recommendations if your system doesn’t meet the required standards.

Our qualified technicians can carry out any necessary repairs, and our LEV System Design Team is available to assess whether modifications, upgrades, or a new system are needed.

Safety is not an intellectual exercise to keep us in work. It is a matter of life and death. It is the sum of our contributions to safety management that determines whether the people we work with live or die

Annual LEV Audit

Maintaining Machine Safety & Ensuring Compliance...

The law is that the employer must maintain LEV system performance and should also arrange a thorough examination and test at least every 14 months to ensure it remains effective in controlling airborne contaminants and protecting workers from health hazards.

On completion of installation of recommended LEV Dust or Oil/ Coolant Mist Extraction System G-Tech Machine Safety Ltd. also offer an Annual Safety Audit including air flow measurement readings to monitor efficiency.
